JOHN LENNON
December 8, 1980. For people like me who grew up with
his music and thought he was more popular than God,
this was the end of an era. By 1970 the Beatles had
disbanded, but they were still making great music as solo
artists. Included is Working Class Hero, a great song
that shocked a lot of people for using one one of many
expletives that up until then had been banned and tightly
controlled by the music industry and the "powers that be".
When John Lennon spoke,
people listened. I was a huge fan and I remember going to work
past the Dakota and seeing the huge crowds after he was shot.
The end of an era that started with a song named Love Me Do.
They were in the right place at the right time, especially
after watching the funeral of JFK. Everyone remembers
watching JFK's son John saluting to his father as the hearse passed.
Then we got LBJ, a guy with a Texas drawl that was night
and day different than JFK had been. It was a wakeup call.
John Lennon and the Beatles made us feel good.
Every song was different. They had something for everyone.

Working Class Hero (Lennon) - 3:50
As soon as your born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all 'Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A Working Class Hero is something to be A Working Class Hero is something to be
They've hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool 'Till you're so fuckin' crazy you can't follow their rules A Working Class Hero is something to be A Working Class Hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can't really function you're so full of fear A Working Class Hero is something to be A Working Class Hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion, sex and T.V. And you think you're so clever and classless and free But you're still fuckin' peasants as far as I can see A Working Class Hero is something to be A Working Class Hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A Working Class Hero is something to be A Working Class Hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero, well just follow me If you want to be a hero, well just follow me
