THE BEACHES

BIG OAK BEACH
Big Oak Beach 1931. Note how large Noble's house was in comparison to the others. By 1931 it looks like Edgewater was all layed out. Completely different than the 10 or 11 years preceding it. Note the size of the tree in front of Noble's house, then compare it below. Also see photo below with my brothers from '49. Also there is no 1-B now. In this photo the house directly lined up behind the pole on the diving platform was 1-B.
Bill says: This is a view of the Big Oak from which the beach and area got it's name. It was adjacent to 4-A and the photo was taken from the diving tower at the end of the pier in 1931.

Bronx Beach and Pool. To extreme right is Mermaid Beach which was next door and run by the Stemmer family.-Photo 40's.
Big Oak 1920. This photo looking south towards the bridge. Note the piece of land towards where Bronx Beach would later be.
Photo- Bill Twomey
Same as above but closer. Look at the single house beyond the tree. Also note the little crossing.

The cluster of trees in the background would be in front of Dean's house, almost back to the fence that seperates Edgewater from Alden Park.
Big Oak
Note the one piece bathing suits on the men in this 1925 photo. Bottom row: John Petz, Ed McNamara, William Conroy; Middle row: Felix Rogers, David Carr, "Buddy" Bloomer, John McNamara; Top row: Ann Petz and Clio Greenish.

Wooden Big Oak Diving Board
Bill says: I found this nice one of the diving platform. I like it better than the others because you see the entire platform.

Big Oak
Bill says: I like this shot of Big Oak Beach because it shows so much. It was taken circa 1930 and Locust Point is in the far left background.

This is the way I remember the beaches every day in the summer before air-conditioning became widespread. In fact, the older people never took to air conditioning. They were tough back then.
The houseboat was owned by Eleanor Bligh, mother of Barbara, Dennis, Pat (Gidget) and Michael.
Thanks to Frances Reith, Mike Bligh's cousin.
Stepping Stones - Later photo with dormers removed.
Hudon-Athens Lighthouse
Stepping Stones Lighthouse when occupied. The dormer windows would later be removed when it became automated. Compare this with photo below.
What many people don't know is there is a duplicate to our Stepping Stones Lighthouse located up the Hudson, adjacent to the town of Hudson, N.Y. and easily accessible by Metro North. This lighthouse is open to the public. Click on the photo or here to go to their website.
Bob Brown, standing in back. Last woman on right is Mrs. Gress. We think woman to her left is Mrs. Dean. All others can't remember.
Looks like Richy Kearns far left?

KILLIE ROCK BEACH
Killie Rock
Robert DeNiro stands on Killie Rock while Robin Williams looks on from jetty. Beyond them is Bobby Roff's (of Alden Park) boat with a camera crew. Click HERE for the video clip.
Loretta O'Brien and Martha Nicolay, at Killie Rock.
SANDY BEACH
A long shot showing Edgewater at Low tide c.20's
The big rock is still there. Note the shed on top of Sandy Pier.
A close up of the shack on Sandy Pier. Note the shape of the boats, many that sat in the Edgewater boatyard for decades.
This is Sandy Beach circa 1918. The three men at the extreme left are Will Stenek, Jack McCaffrey and John McNamara (Mack's grandfather).

Sandy Beach - Steve Hunton - late 70's. See the shells. Recently someone has been spending days and days cleaning the beach. He asked me not to use his name.
Great job.
Hard work cleaning Sandy everyday.
Anthony Winoski and Scott Hostomsky at a recently cleaned Sandy Beach.
FAT RUNWAY
Something a little more modern, circa 1954. Two cousins Eugene Twomey and Cathy Twomey posing in front of 10-D. Note the Fat Runway in the background in this high tide photo.

Now
This photo from about 1955 is an excellent shot of the Fat Runway. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10-D are in the background.

DOGGY BEACH AND BOAT YARD
To the right is Doggy Beach with another barge that sat facing out.
To the right of the barge is the Boat Yard. On Bill Twomey's Page is another shot of this, looking the other way from behind the derelict sailboat. Note the rails in the yard for launching and the Square Club off in the distance.
Same as above.
One more. You might be able to see things better using the shots.
A closeup of the Boat Yard with it's barge.
Same as above.
